Summary

Description

Glenfarg Community Centre is the only space in Glenfarg where formal groups can meet and social activities can occur -  it is the beating heart of the village.  The Community Centre, comprising the existing village hall and meeting room with the addition of the newly re-furnbished school house is a SCIO.

Since the closure of the 2 hotels and the village church there is nowhere else for the villagers to meet. Currently the hall users include beavers, cubs, scouts, mother and toddlers, accordion and fiddle, knit and natter, cinema, wine club, badminton, weekly coffee morning, soup and chat, the rural, armchair yoga and pilates classes.

The lack of a village inn has resulted in the creation of regular pop up pubs in the hall. Villagers often hold parties for adults and children, it’s a great space for a ceilidh, talent show or musical evening.

The all electric centre has been badly affected by the soaring electricity costs as we are charged at business rates. We need to reduce our electricity costs to minimise any rent rises for our hall users .Increasing our rents could result in hall users being unable to afford the lets. We are asking for help towards the cost of installing solar panels and batteries. We have already changed our lighting in the main hall reducing our lighting bill by seven eighth. Other energy reduction projects we are investigating include improved insulation and air source heat pumps.

Unaffordable hall lets would result in increased social isolation, increased travel for villagers who have the energy and determination to continue participating in formal clubs, a less viable community with no heart.
